If you’ve been around for a while, you know that I love reading series books. But I know that for some people, reading a series is an investment, especially, when we have a lot of other responsibilities and obligations to juggle.

One of my favorite things is to provide recommendations of books that I’ve loved, and that I would absolutely read again. (See Part 1 here.) For this second installment, here are five series, in five different genres, that I think are worth your time:

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson (YA mystery; 3 books): This completed trilogy is about a high school student who takes on solving a cold case as a class project. The trilogy was just made into an adaptation on Netflix, so it’s the perfect time to pick this up. The books in this series include:

  • A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder
  • Good Girl, Bad Blood
  • As Good As Dead

Bergman Brothers by Chloe Liese (romance; 7 books): This completed book series is about the love stories of 7 siblings and has excellent disability and neurodivergence representation throughout. Many of the siblings are also athletes, so there are several sub-plots that connect to sports. The final book in the series was just released, so the stories are all complete. The books in this series include:

  • Only When It’s Us
  • Always Only You
  • Ever After Always
  • With You Forever
  • Everything for You
  • If Only You
  • Only and Forever

Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer (fantasy; 3 books): This completed trilogy is about a kingdom filled with tension over a mysterious illness where the cure is limited to only those who can afford it. The female main character is an apprentice apothecary who is trying to bring medicine to her community illegally. In the first book, she encounters the two brothers who reign over the kingdom after their parents’ assassination and many shenanigans ensue. The books in this series include:

  • Defy the Night
  • Defend the Dawn
  • Destroy the Day

Boys of Tommen by Chloe Walsh (YA romance; 5 books): This ongoing series is one that I have been recommending to anyone who will listen. The books are long, but you are so invested in the characters that the pages fly by. Set in a high school in Ireland, the books follow several teens and their interconnected relationships. If you want to be immersed in a new series, this is a great one to choose. The books in this series include:

  • Binding 13
  • Keeping 13
  • Saving 6
  • Redeeming 6
  • Taming 7

Ruth Galloway Mysteries by Elly Griffiths (mystery; 15 books): This ongoing series is one of my favorites for character development. Each book includes a cold case and a contemporary mystery that are connected across time. The female main character is also an academic, so there are lots of fun higher education jokes. This is a series where I pick up the latest book as soon as it releases. The books in this series include:

  • The Crossing Places
  • The Janus Stone
  • The House at Sea’s End
  • A Room Full of Bones
  • A Dying Fall
  • The Outcast Dead
  • The Ghost Fields
  • The Woman in Blue
  • The Chalk Pit
  • The Dark Angel
  • The Stone Circle
  • The Lantern Men
  • The Night Hawks
  • The Locked Room
  • The Last Remains
