My Subscription Side Quest Favorites (Part 1)

As one of my 5 side quests for 2025, I challenged myself to watch something from each of our subscription channels every month.

So far, this has been one of the more fun challenges that I have engaged in, and it’s introduced me to some really great television and movies.

I thought I would share some of my favorites from the past quarter in case you are looking for something to add to your to-watch pile.

Explorer: The Last Tepui (Disney+) – this documentary follows a group of mountain climbers and scientists who are trying to find new species in a very remote part of the world. I loved the combination of sport and science in this short film.

Mare of Easttown (Max) – I do love a good crime drama and this one, which is set in a small town and follows the stories of several families impacted by a series of crimes involving young women who are missing or killed, was immersive. The acting, including a lead actress role by Kate Winslet, was incredibly well done.

The Patient (Hulu) – I binged this series in a few days since I really wanted to know what was going to happen in the end! The show follows a therapist who is kidnapped by a serial killer patient that is trying to change their ways. There is plenty of dark humor, but the show also has a meaningful sub-plot around the therapist’s family and their Jewish heritage.

Presumed Innocent (AppleTV+) – I just started this series (haven’t finished it yet), but I’m really enjoying it. This is based off of a book (which is the first in a series) about a prosecutor who is accused of a crime against another prosecutor. It reminds me of early John Grisham narratives, which I loved reading when I was growing up — and it makes me want to revisit this book series as well.

What are some of the television shows and films that you’ve been loving lately?
